EVENT: Shane Balkowitsch Wet Plate Demonstration

Date: 7/16/2016

To kick off the exhibit titled Dark Silver: A Collection of Black Glass Ambrotypes, Bismarck artist Shane Balkowitsch and assistants will demonstrate the wet plate collodion process, with members of the audience serving as subjects.

The wet plate process, which was in common use from the mid- to late-1800s, uses a glass plate and various chemicals to produce the image. Every step from applying the chemicals to developing the image must be completed within a few minutes, making the process extremely challenging and rare today. Because the finished image is quite literally made of silver on glass, however, the images have a uniquely beautiful quality that must be seen in person to fully appreciate.

The demonstration is from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.
