Fort Mandan Ready for Summer Travelers

Posted on 5/11/2012

WASHBURN - As part of National Travel and Tourism Week, May 5-13, the Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation (Foundation) wants to announce that all of their facilities are open for travelers. Travel Week is the unofficial kick off to the summer travel season and things are better than ever at Fort Mandan.

Last Year, Fort Mandan, the Headwaters Visitor Center and parts of the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center were closed because of the record flooding on the Missouri River. A 12-foot dyke was constructed around the Headwaters Visitor Center and Fort Mandan, and both facilities were completely emptied to protect their valuable items from flood waters. Since last fall, the staff of the Foundation have worked hard to get both facilities up and running.

"We're really excited to be able to get back to educating travelers about Lewis & Clark and the other stories we tell here," said Wendy Spencer, Foundation vice president.

In addition to the return of Fort Mandan and the visitor center, the Foundation recently completed its renovation of the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. The renovated interpretive center features all-new exhibits that tell the stories of Lewis & Clark and the traders and explorers who came after them. There is also an interactive Centennial Farms display that celebrates the farms and ranches across the state that have been owned or operated by the same family for at least 100 years.

"We have so many new things happening this year that it doesn't matter if this is your first visit or your tenth," said Spencer. "There are so many new things to explore when you visit the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan."

The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $5.00 for students K - college. The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center is located in Washburn, 38 miles north of Bismarck on Hwy 83.
