Murder or Suicide? The mysterious death of Meriwether Lewis
10/8/2009
The Lewis & Clark Fort Mandan Foundation will be commemorating the 200th anniversary of Meriwether Lewis this weekend with special interpretive programming. Jeff Turning Heart Jr., Interpretive Specialist, will present his program entitled ‘Murder or Suicide: The Mysterious Death of Meriwether Lewis’ this weekend at the Headwater Fort Mandan Visitor Center.
On October 11, 1809, Meriwether Lewis died as a result of gunshot wounds at a small remote inn in rural Tennessee. Due to the remoteness of the location and the time required to summon legal officials, Lewis was buried on-site without an investigation or autopsy. Within days of his death, numerous stories emerged. Some early reports argued that Lewis had committed suicide others argued that Lewis had been murdered.
“As I am presenting my own program on the mystery of Meriwether Lewis, mixing a bit of modern with the past, granted it is not my opinion on what happened” says Turning Heart. Adding, “It’s just broadening some horizons on those who are interested in history and mystery. And I invite those who are interested in either history or mystery or even both to come and attend and make history with us.”
Turning Heart will present his program at the Headwaters Fort Mandan Visitor Center at 11 am and 2:00 pm on Saturday and 2:00 on Sunday. Regular admission fees apply. $7.50 for adults, $5 for students, and members are free.
