One Exhibit Leaves, Another to Come! By David Borlaug, President
1/7/2010
At this writing, we are hosting Sonja Schierle from the Linden Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, who is here to retrieve the Prince Maximilian artifacts that have been on loan to us this past year. In the 14 months that that this exhibit has been shown, along with the Karl Bodmer display, over 25,000 visitors from all 50 states and dozens of countries have come to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, right here in Washburn, to view them!
Among those visitors was the German Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Klaus Scharioth.
While we are sad to see the artifacts leave us, we know that this is the start of a great partnership with the Linden Museum. We hope to continue to work with them, perhaps providing artifacts of our own for them to display, as well as future exhibits coming to us from Germany.
With the artifacts gone, we are continuing to display various interpretive panels from the exhibit. So if you missed the artifacts, you may still catch much of the compelling story of this exhibit, written by our own Clay Jenkinson with displays directed by Wendy Spencer and crafted and installed by Kevin Kirkey. All of the sections of the display were produced in Bismarck by United Printing/Spit ‘n Image, one of the exhibit sponsors.
We are now busy preparing another exhibit will be opening Friday, January 15—“Rivers, Edens, Empires,” a collection of portfolio images from the Library of Congress. These images were a gift to our Foundation from Congressman Earl Pomeroy. Come take in this revealing display, featuring maps and other images that tell a remarkable story.
Remember both the Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan are open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5:00 on Sunday. Call us anytime at 462-8535 for more information or go to our website, www.fortmandan.com.
